The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a sizable dog breed classified within the retriever, gundog, and sporting categories. This breed originated in the Chesapeake Bay area of the United States during the 1800s. Initially utilized by local market hunters to retrieve waterfowl, haul fishing nets, and assist fishermen, it is now mainly a family pet and a hunting partner, recognized for its cheerful and bright character; bravery; eagerness to work; alertness; intelligence; affinity for water; and hunting skills. The Chesapeake typically falls into the medium to large size range and bears a resemblance to the Labrador Retriever, but it is distinguished by its wavy coat.
