DESCRIPTION

Originally developed from Mastiff-type breeds by the monks at the Hospice of St. Bernard in the Swiss Alps, this breed has gained a somewhat exaggerated reputation as a mountain rescue dog globally. The Saint Bernard is known for being affectionate and completely dependable, possessing many admirable qualities. With a calm demeanor, this breed prefers a leisurely pace of life. Due to its massive size, the Saint Bernard is relatively uncommon as a pet, as the space needed to accommodate its large stature is significant; additionally, the cost of feeding one is another important factor. There are two types of coats available: smooth and rough.
