CAT BREED
Recognized as America's original cat, the Maine Coon derives its name from the state where it was first discovered. Numerous entertaining yet largely improbable tales explain how this breed arrived there. Some wild theories regarding the Maine Coon's origins suggest that it evolved from Scandinavian felines brought by the Vikings, while others allege that many of these cats were sent to America by Marie Antoinette, who wanted to rescue her animals during the French Revolution. The idea that the Maine Coon originated as a hybrid between wild cats and raccoons can certainly be ruled out as scientifically impossible, even though the cat's bushy tail may have lent some believability to this notion. Large and attractive, the Maine Coon features a thick, shaggy, waterproof coat that was beneficial when serving as a farm cat, adapting to an outdoor lifestyle in the harsh winters of North America. Once valued for their insect-hunting abilities, this breed has become a beloved pet since the mid-20th century. Maine Coons possess many charming traits, including a tendency to exhibit kitten-like behavior throughout their lives. Their vocalizations, which some liken to a chirp akin to that of a bird, seem surprisingly petite for such a large cat. These felines take their time maturing and typically do not achieve their full impressive size until they are five years old.
