CAT BREED
The name of this cat comes from the Selkirk Mountains, located near its home region in Montana. The breed was developed in the late 1980s, originating at an animal rescue center where a kitten with curly fur was born among straight-coated siblings from a feral mother cat. This curly-coated kitten became the foundation for the Selkirk Rex breed. As the breed evolved, intentional breedings with purebred cats produced both the shorthair and long-haired varieties of the Selkirk Rex, resulting from crosses with Persians. It is common to find straight-coated kittens among both variations. The Selkirk Rex has a thick, soft coat that forms random curls or waves, differing from the tidy patterns seen in other Rex breeds. Typically, there is more curl around the neck and belly area. Its whiskers are sparse and curly, and they are prone to breaking easily. Grooming a Selkirk Rex is relatively simple, but it's best to use a gentle approach, as excessive brushing can flatten the curls. While these cats are calm and patient, they are not sedentary and enjoy snuggling. Selkirk Rex cats maintain their playful nature for many years and continue to love engaging in play.
