DESCRIPTION

The ancestors of the Turkish Van cat, named after the Lake Van area in eastern Turkey, may have been present in what is now known as the Middle East for several centuries. The contemporary Turkish Van was first bred in the U.K. during the 1950s, and since then, breeding cats have been sent to various countries, although they continue to be quite uncommon. The Turkish Van is not the best choice for someone seeking a calm lap cat; this playful and energetic breed enjoys engaging in games, particularly when the whole family is involved. Additionally, many Turkish Vans have a fondness for water play, with some being recognized as competent swimmers.
