DOG BREED
Hairless dogs were considered of sacred significance in Mexico before the Conquest and were often used as sacrifices or eaten ritually in religious ceremonies. Because of these practices, the Mexican Hairless barely escaped extinction and it was not until the mid-20th century that breeders began working toward its revival. Three distinct sizes are now recognized. Like all hairless dogs, the breed has limited general appeal and is rare. Nevertheless, the Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican Hairless, is attractive, good-natured, and intelligent, and is likely to reward its owner with loyalty and affection.
